Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This product is a progressive Scan DVD Recorder DMR-EZ17K with ACCUTUNE Digital Tuner, 2x LP Horizontal Resolution (500 lines), Super Multi-Format Recording & Playback and DV Input. Thanks to high-speed Quick Start, DVD-RAM discs are ready to record just one second after switching on the power. Being able to record almost immediately means you'll never miss the scenes you want to catch. The Accutune Digital Tuner is a high performance hybrid tuner capable of receiving both digital and analog broadcasts. It uses a signal processor to effectively control noise and distortion, and its proprietary matching circuits allow it to transform and separate digital or analog signals. When digital broadcast signals drop out, generally the picture either disappears or becomes filled with block-noise, but the Accutune Digital Tuner produces a beautiful picture even under difficult reception conditions, such as when there are obstacles interfering with direct signal access. This DVD recorder offers twice the horizontal resolution (500 lines vs. the 250-line standard) of many other DVD recorders when recording in LP mode. What does this mean? It means you can fit up to four hours of recordings on one DVD (4.7GB capacity) and still enjoy the crisp, vibrant and exceptionally detailed images delivered by 500 lines of horizontal resolution.Incredibly versatile and multi-format-friendly, this DVD recorder can record to and play back just about any DVD you can throw at it. Specifically, it can record to and play back DVD-R/-RW/-RAM/+R/+RW discs, as well as DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, DVD-R (dual layer), DVD+R (dual layer), CD, CD-DA and CD-R/RW (including MP3 files). With a Panasonic DVD recorder, never think twice about what disc you need.Panasonic DVD recorders are equipped with a high-precision progressive video processor that handles 30-frame progressive scan images on NTSC discs. This lets you enjoy high-resolution progressive playback of original DVD images.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy   December 17, 2008
This DVR is the worst electronic appliance I have ever purchased in my life.

Channel changes take number of seconds, probably 2-3 at best.

The unit is noisy to the point where watching a DVD is distracting.

Startup takes ages - probably about 10 seconds to open the disc tray to place a DVD. I found myself not sure whether I had pressed the button correctly, waiting a long time for the response, and then pressing it again - and having the tray pop open and close shut - being forced to press it once again - with probably about 20+ seconds transpiring.

The documentation is sub-standard.

MP3, JPEG and other standard format files are unplayable - just check the documentation - there is a very brief section which states its shortcomings.

I've been very disappointed with this - and will be steering away from other panasonic products in the future, even though I have had a string of good experiences with them. Like I said, this is without doubt the very worst electronic appliance, I have ever wasted my dollars on.

3 out of 5 stars pretty good but loud   September 30, 2008
After contacting Panasonic for the firmware update necessary to make the unit actually record (it seems that a factory refurb'd unit would have the factory update, but alas..) the unit records great. When I can find a DVD-RAM disk I'm eager to try the slip-time recording. I agree with several of the other reviewers: the unit has the loudest drive that I've ever heard in my life. I haven't yet tried the HD tuner: Panasonic tells me that my rabbit ears are too old for HD channels??

3 out of 5 stars freezes, will not eject disk   September 2, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I purchased my Panasonic EZ17 in May 2007 and it worked quite well up until one sad day in August 2008. The picture froze during playback of a DVD+R DL disk and after trying EVERYTHING (eject, reset, reboot, etc.), the unit would simply not eject the disk. The disk doesn't even spin and the front display indicates the tray is "open" even though it isn't. The only useful info provided by Panasonic Customer Support was the name of a local "authorized" independent repair station, which so far has been unable to solve the problem. Oh well, looks like it's dead and ready for burial, and after only a year of infrequent usage. Before it died, I really liked the features except that the unit required an awfully long time to start-up when you press Power-On. Overall, I think it is an inferior model compared to competing brands and products. I suspect that Sony and Toshiba both make DVD recorders that work better and longer than Panasonic.
Disappointing reliability. Internal software/hardware doesn't seem very robust.

4 out of 5 stars Very good DVD recorder   June 30, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

This is my second Panasonic DVD recorder and I have not been disappointed (my first Panasonic DVD recorder is several years old and still works well). I'm sure there are things that could have been better, or additions that would help it become a top of the line recorder, but if that's what you want, then buy a top of the line recorder. This is a very good recorder that does everything most of us need it to do. I have not used some of the options, such as being able to watch a show from the beginning while you are still recording it, but from reading other reviews, it seems to be a nice option. So if you are looking for an inexpensive recorder that works well and is fairly customer-friendly, the buy this one.

1 out of 5 stars Unreliable   April 28, 2008

I have had this for awhile. When it works, it works well, but they way they have the circuitry set up, it checks the disc before ejecting, which can make the player lockup and you can't get the disc out.
I ended up throwing mine away and buying a different brand.
Be forwarned, not a reliable product.
