Obsolete January 4, 2009 Even with the latest firmware update (2.0) this model won't play many of the very latest Blu-Ray disks. But it's really SONY you should be mad at, for carelessly changing the blu-ray format without regard to compatability. I guess this is their way of saying "Buy a SONY player or you will be sorry".
I wish HD DVD has won...
Slow, Buggy, Do Not Buy! December 31, 2008 My parents bought this player last year, and whenever I come home and use it I want to bash it with a baseball bat. As has been noted by others, it takes an incredibly long time to load, sometimes locking up and not loading at all. I myself own a PS3, and it loads all discs in 3-5 seconds, compared to the 60-90 seconds of this player.
This becomes even more frustrating when combined with the auto-shutoff and lack of playback memory. For example, I was just watching my Lost Season 4 blu-ray set when I had to pause due to a phone call. When my five minute phone call was over I came back to find the player had completely stopped. When I tried to restart it would not load, so I had to power cycle. Then it took the normal 90 seconds to load, and then I had to navigate back to my location in an episode. All told it took about 5 minutes to get back to where I was when the phone rang. If this had been on my PS3, A) it would have stayed paused and not shut down, but B) Had I stopped it myself, it would have instantly restarted at the right spot in the episode.
In fairness, when the player is working the video and sound quality are indeed suburb.
In conclusion, this player is slow and frustrating. And I didn't even get into the saga that is uploading the firmware. Don't buy this player, shell out the extra bucks for either a better player or a PS3 (even if you have no interest in games).
Great for Blue-Ray, Hard on the Patience December 29, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I ordered this as a gift for my husband. He loves how crisp and clear Blu-ray discs play on this, but he loses his mind with the amount of time it can take to loads a Blu-ray disc and when it skips in the middle of a movie. (This happens almost every time we watch something on Blu-ray.) I like to play CDs through the receiver through this, but it takes forever to load the CD and skip tracks--it skips up to 4 seconds only when trying to fast forward. I would recommend this DVD player for movies, but be patient if it skips or doesn't function properly. We're on our second player (thanks to Amazon/Samsung standing behind their products).
The Edsel of home electronics (deserved a zero rating but wasn't available) December 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is simply the worst product I've ever purchased. As others have pointed out, at the price point I didn't expect the fastest loading or most user-friendly product, but I at least expected it to work. This is the equivalent of a car that doesn't run, or a Kentucky Fried Chicken franshisee that doesn't serve food.
Again, restating other viewpoints, load-times are incredibly slow, as is the time it takes to simply open up the disc-tray. These are forgiveable traits as long as the product delivers what it purposts to do, Blu-Ray quality playback that's reliable.
The playback, when working, is satisfactory. The problem is its so buggy and unreliable that its simply a defective device. Even when working "normally" my discs (Blu-Ray and regular) would freeze in the middle of playback. Annoying, but not nearly as annoying of having discs that won't playback at all, regardless of "firmware updates" (which are by themselves convoluted and not worth the amount of time to deal with it).
In short, Samsung should be ashamed, its borderline thievery to have sold this product, and I'm starting to wonder if Blu-Ray itself isn't a huge white elephant. Yeah, the picture is great, but so was my old dvds that didn't cost nearly enough and at least WORKED (first dvd player was bought in 2000, still works).
Slowest player ever December 13, 2008 I bought this about a year ago. It doesn't play most discs. Even open the tray to insert a disc takes forever. And it crashes, no way I can eject the disc unless I turn it off first. At first I thought it was the disc was bad, so I asked Netflix for replacement many times. I just download firmware update today. The player is stuck at verifying firmware version and won't go anywhere. I bought Sony PS3 which is just $100 more, it plays anything, super-faster reading all blu-ray disc. Off-course, it plays games and internet too. It plays movies from my external drives too. BD-P1400 is my first Samsung product. I will never buy Samsung product again.
